The exhibition was opened by Alexey Repin, Managing Director of the Kazakhstan Centre for Housing and Utilities, Agency for Construction, Housing and Utilities of the Republic of Kazakhstan; Jorg Hetsch, head of the Representative Office of the German Economy in Central Asia; Jean-Jacques Giyodo, Economic Counselor of the Embassy of France in Kazakhstan; Eschim Kababchioglu, Consul General of Turkey in Almaty; Edward Strachan, Regional Director of ITE Group Plc (UK) for the CIS; and Nailya Sermukhamedova, Director of the Construction Exhibitions Division at Iteca (Kazakhstan).
Iteca, together with partners from the UK, Germany, Italy, China, UAE and Turkey traditionally opened the autumn exhibition season with KazBuild. Heat&Vent Plus and Aqua-Therm Almaty took place alongside the oldest event in Kazakhstan’s construction industry at the Atakent Exhibition Centre.
By combining into a single event two well-known shows, the exhibition area of the sector “Heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water supply and plumbing” increased by 56% against last year. According to experts, the growth of the scope and status of the exhibition can benefit the construction industry, for which the introduction of new energy-efficient technologies has become an urgent issue in recent times. As noted by Alexey Repin, Managing Director of the Kazakhstan Centre for Housing and Utilities, Agency for Construction, Housing and Utilities of the Republic of Kazakhstan, this area should be one of the main components of the comprehensive programme to modernise the utilities sector, which is currently being coordinated in state agencies and may be adopted before the end of the year.
In Kazakhstan, the idea of control and energy conservation has seriously concerned government officials. Recently, the figure of 240 kW/h per year (the amount of electricity used to heat one square metre) was announced, which shocked both environmentalists and the public, especially when compared with the European average of 100-120 kW/h, and taking into account the difference in climatic conditions between Kazakhstan and, for example, Sweden. The introduction of new energy-efficient technologies has become a priority for developing the utilities sector in Kazakhstan, in which, incidentally, many of the technical standards are outdated. Changes are coming.
The participation of six national groups in KazBuild 2010 is proof of the great interest in the Kazakhstani market from the international trade community, and of the prominence and authority of the expo-event itself. Visitors were able to see the national stands of Germany, Iran, Italy, Finland, France and South Korea. After a short absence, the Italian Association of Bricklayers, Assomarmomachine, returned to the exhibition.
According to a survey of exhibitors, many of them signed contracts during KazBuild.
The Kazakhstani office of the Polish-Spanish brand ULMA signed a major contract with a local company to supply formwork systems for the construction of transport facilities (bridges) in the largest project of the Central Asian transport industry - the Western China-Western Europe highway. ULMA is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of formwork and scaffolding, supplying its products to 55 countries. The President of the Board of ULMA Construccion Polska SA, Andrzej Kozlowski, flew to Almaty specifically in order to take part in the exhibition and, as it turned out, to sign the contract.
Grazyna Shidlovskayte, Director of Apriori: “Our company has been in the market for just two years. We are exhibiting at KazBuild for the first time. The exhibition, without a doubt, has been positive for us. We deal with polymer liquid coating systems for concrete foundations designed for shops, hangars and warehouses. One of the new products we presented here was the ‘Hard’ coating system, which is used with a high mechanical load on the floor. In the Kazakhstani market, there are not yet any companies that supply such coatings. A very important point, which I would like to highlight, is that almost 70% of the visitors were our target audience. At the exhibition we learnt a lot about facilities and about customers. We did not conclude any contracts directly at the exhibition, and this is because of the nature of our products. But we laid the ground. People have learnt about us through the exhibition, and today our specialist looked at a site at which, it appears, we will apply a coating in the near feature.”
Victoria Patrakova, Analytical Manager at Knauf: “We focus on innovative solutions and maximum use of resources - in many respects, this attitude to work also ensures the leading position of Knauf in the construction and design sphere. One of the new products we presented at KazBuild 2010 was self-leveling floors. Our target audience is vast. However, we made our main interest at the show architects and designers, who are always interested in new materials and technologies. I should note that the autumn exhibition had a large presence of companies, which indicates some recovery in the market.”
Dauren Orumbayev, GreenTas: “I am a scientist and inventor, and am very proud that my invention, self-luminescent plastic, received high praise at the exhibition. Our stand was literally attacked by the visitors at KazBuild and the exhibiting companies. We have only been going a month and participating in this exhibition was a brilliant start for us. Here, we met a company from which, in the near future, we plan to get a loan lease equipment for the industrial production of our product. Indeed, the demand for it is high enough. At the moment, we still have verbal agreements, but we have arranged meetings immediately after the show and will sign contracts for exports to Germany, Hungary, and Kyrgyzstan. Our plastic can glow in the dark for a long time, but it is not radioactive. You can use my development in landscape design (a number of specialists in this area have already expressed their approval), and at home - extra lighting at night is very useful for sick people. But, perhaps, the most important area for using the plastic is the social sphere. Luminous instruction signs hung on premises of various kinds are indispensable in emergency situations when, as a rule, lights are turned off and people do not know where to go, where to find the way out.”
Yerzhan Zhalgasbay, BTA ORIX Leasing: “I came to KazBuild as a visitor. I used to think that all the building materials sold in our country were Russian and Chinese - it turns out I was mistaken. Every second or third stand was a Kazakhstani manufacturer. This is certainly encouraging, and directly corresponds to our goals - we are looking for domestic manufacturers to offer them cheap lines of credit in the form of leasing. From 1 September, we launched a joint programme with FRP Damu to finance SMEs engaged in manufacturing, and provide funds for leasing at a rate of 8% per annum. At the same time, we also lend to start-ups without any commission, they only have to pay for insurance.”
Svetlana, designer: “I visit KazBuild and KazBuild Spring every year. I'm interested, of course, in design, and everything that is used in interiors: floor and wall coverings, wall decoration, tiles, stained-glass technology, sandwich panels - and much more from what I have just seen at the exhibition, and I only went around two pavilions. The autumn exhibition is very diverse, and the exhibitors presented a wide range of products. In particular, I liked the new collection of glazed tiles in a Japanese style.”
The exhibition’s business programme was comprehensive. The 2nd International Competition of Innovations in the Construction Industry “Goods, Brands, Technologies” was successfully held within KazBuild 2010. It presented 19 new products in the finishing and building materials sector, offered in the Kazakhstani market by domestic and foreign companies. First prize in the competition was unanimously awarded to an inspection hatch made from a polymer-sand composition. It should be noted that this is a domestic invention by Elbrus Ltd from Ekibastuz.
For the first time, the GreenTerra International Landscape and Redevelopment Festival was held within KazBuild. Over 20 companies from Belgium, Kazakhstan, Netherlands and Russia took part in the festival. The festival included an exotic plant competition, master classes and seminars. In addition, visitors were able to receive free advice form experts on growing houseplants.
KazBuild 2010, Heat&Vent Plus 2010 and Aqua-Therm Almaty 2010 were supported by the Agency for Construction, Housing and Utilities of the Republic of Kazakhstan; Ministry of Industry and New Technologies of the Republic of Kazakhstan; Almaty City Administration; and diplomatic missions of the participating countries.
